Teaching to learn

Self-Reliance

Being independent is the same somehow,

My New Year’s Resolution

The year 2006 has come and passed, and I know I’ve done a lot of things that year. I’ve accomplished a lot and I guess I’ve learned more about myself lately. But this year is a new one, and just everyone I still have a lot to improve in myself. I hope to be closer to God. I hope to be more studious and hardworking so that I could have higher grades and so I could make my parents proud of me. I hope to be more responsible. I hope I could be more understanding and patient. I hope I could eat less. I hope I could have more time to think about what I really want to be in the future. I hope I could travel places. I hope for a lot of things. I just hope that when this year ends, I could look back and be satisfied of what I’ve done.

Pleasing the real reason for the season

Christmas is the time of year
when people come together to give cheer.
It is the most important season
and it exists for a reason.

Christmas is the time when Christ was born
in the manger when no one mourned.
When the time came a star appeared,
to lead the way for those three kings.

Christmas is the time of sharing
of what we have to those who have nothing.
It is the time to open our hearts
to the Lord who will come to us.

How Do I Want to Be Remembered

I am a person created by God
therefore I am different from other people
My life may not be the same as yours
because I am unique in many ways

The life I live is not ordinary
I guess there’s nothing so simple in it.
I live a different lifestyle from you
because that’s the way God wants it too.

My life will not be for too long
anytime I may be gone.
I am hoping people would remember me
just the way I want them to.

I hope I’ll be remembered for my feats
I hope I’ll be remembered for what I achieved.
I don’t want people to remember me just as somebody, I hope they’ll remember me as me.

My Own Araby

I saw this guy
Who I thought was a total hottie.
He looked so cute.
He was my Prince Charming.

I often saw him

He smiled at me and he looked me in the eye
Not knowing that, he took my breath away.

I remember how happy I felt that time
to see my guy.
I loved him so much.
He was my first major crush.

But then one day, I realized
we couldn’t be together, perhaps only in my dreams.
He seemed too far away.
He was the guy I saw on tv.

My Light Bulb Moment

I was standing in a dark room
and couldn’t see much but I felt something deep inside
I blocked my mind from all of reality
and focused on one thing: The Holy Spirit and my God.

As I was standing in that room filled with candles,
praising the Lord with all my heart,
I didn’t know why I couldn’t stand
and felt shivers all around.

But then my fright suddenly disappeared
and a realization came to me,
I shouldn’t be afraid
because I have the Lord in me.

After that moment I looked at life
and realized how lucky I was
to see God reaching out a hand to me
as if I was the only one.

Conquer your demons or you will pass them on to your children.

I think that I can reflect on this line. It just hit me very hard. For me, this means that we should be aware of the weakness that we have or possess in ourselves right now. After being aware of it, we should find a way to overcome or get rid of it. Like me, I am totally aware of my weakness but I don’t do anything about it. If you are like this, you will never get rid of the particular weakness that you have. You will just carry it on with you your whole life. I know I should do something to change my bad attitude and I know I should do it now or else bring it with me forever…

I got this from a sonnet by Shakespeare entitled, “Sonnet 18”. It’s mainly about telling someone how much you love him. So back to the line, I think it’s the best. It speaks about a love so lasting that it never ends. It also expresses how deep a person can ever love. It also means that love would go on no matter what may happen. For me, that line speaks about true love. Love you can only witness when you find two people look at each other in the eye and say, “I love you. You are mine.” Love may not be found anywhere. You have to dig deeper to find it. It’s hard to find love, you know. That’s why, when you find it, never let it go.

My only love sprung from my only hate

During Literature class, we watched this movie entitled "Romeo and Juliet" from the novel by Shakespeare. What really struck me was the line "my only love sprung from my only hate". I like it because when you hear it, you don't understand it right away and you need to read between the lines to know the meaning. For me this means that someone you hated at first turned out to be your only love. I really like the contrast in it. It's like unexpected for someone to fall in love with a person whom he really hates. This line is one of a kind. That's another reason why I like it.

Country or City

Life in both places are so different from each other. I think I'd rather go with country than city. The city's just so busy and traffic. It's full of pollution from the cars, the factories, and the air's really dirty in the city. Unlike the country where it's so serene and so quiet. The country is a place where you can find peace. It's a place that suits you when you want to reflect about something or someone. The surroundings are clean and the air isn't polluted. The country is the perfect place for nature lovers because they can be able to find everything there. There are animals, forests, and waterfalls. The country is just the perfect place for someone to live in. It's totally better compared to the city.

"What Goes Around Comes Around"

What goes around indeed comes around. This saying reflects karma. It has a message. What you do to other people goes back to you. That's why we should beware if we do bad things to other people. It's always going to come back to us. It also says that we should be good to other people if we want them to be good to us. We shouldn't put people to harm because if we do, it's gonna come back to us in a much worse way. So for all those bad guys out there, beware: truly, what goes around comes around.

"Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely."

Power. Everyone wants to have power. Well, who doesn't? Power is a thing one does not get easily. One should strive really hard in order to attain power. Power can be used in a great way. It can be used to help other people. It can be used to change people. Unfortunately, power nowadays is used the opposite way. Power leads to corruption, and eventually more power leads to more corruption. What is going on with the world today? Why has everything gone wrong? The world needs people who can handle power the right way. It needs people who can use power for other people, not for themselves. Power can also lead to selfishness and self-centeredness. What will happen to us all if all the powerful people become corrupt? Let's just hope that day won't happen. Let's help one another and unite with one another in order to achieve power and use it the right way.

"The rebel who disobeys, However much the journey costs, he pays."

As we can see in our present lives, there are lots and lots of rebels. Teenage students turning into rebels just because they don't get what they want from their parents. A lot of youth becoming what we call emotional punk just to get the attention of other people. These people do things which make other people notice them. They seek for attention. They want attention. All they need is more and more attention. In this verse, the word rebel refers to all of us. We are all rebels. Not literally, but in a way, we are. We are rebels to God. No one is perfect. We all have our sins. We all make our mistakes. We disobey God everytime he calls out to us. We blame him for the problems we have in our lives. People who disobey must serve a price. A price they would never forget. A price they deserve in order for them to change and become better people.

Life is a box of chocolates

I totally agree. Life indeed, is a box of chocolates. Life is sweet just like chocolates. Life is good, but better than chocolates. Life is a box of chocolates because when you have life, you feel so happy and so contented like you've just eaten a box of chocolates. But like life, there are also chocolates that aren't so sweet. Life, just like chocolates can also be bitter. Some people hate bitter chocolate but there are also some who accept it to try something new. Like chocolates, we should face life, bitter or sweet, because in the end, we'll also get something from it. Unlike chocolates where all you get are calories!

Teach me half the gladness that thy brain must know Such harmonious madness from my lips would flow The world should listen then as I am listening now

For me, this saying means that one person cannot live alone. There must be that one who teaches him about the world, meaning a person who doesn't know anything will never know something if there is no one who teaches or orients him about it. One person can't live all alone for there would really be the need of someone to talk to and someone to share all the memories with. All of us need other people for we would be nothing without anyone in life. It's just like the saying that goes,"No man is an island".

"The Child is Father of (wo)man"

A child in the family makes it happy, fun, and wild. What we are right now, according to this verse is the result of our our childhood, of our past. Our past leads to a future and our future depends on our past. The father of who we are right now is our past. Why? It's because the person we are now, depends on our past. It depends on the experiences we've had in life. That's why each of us is different from the other. We've had different experiences and different lives in the past. What this verse is trying to say is that we should do something right now and not wait for tomorrow because our future depends on what we do. So, if we want to reach our dreams, we should start right now because the present is the father of our future to be.

Hero

There are many kinds of heroes. A person doesn't have to be famous in order to be a hero. He doesn't have to risk his life in order to be called one. The person I can call my hero is my dad. Without him, our lives wouldn't be as great as it is right now. I call my dad a hero because he has a kind heart and he saves other peoples lives. Not very literally. But it's true. My dad really saves lives. He takes care of babies who are premature and makes sure they live and become healthy. My dad doesn't have to be known for him to be my hero. It only takes a few things in order to become a hero. One thing is that a person must do what he does from the heart and not because he wants to be noticed and praised by other people. Heroes are not like that, and so is my father.

"Honor and shame from no condition rise, Act well your part, there all the honor lies."

I think what Alexander Pope is saying here differs in all people's understanding. Well, I have my own opinion of what this quote means. For me, this means that any person, rich or poor, can attain power and fame. Even a very poor person can be honored. He can be honored if he has a good heart and a great personality. This also means that if we want to have honor and power, we should strive really hard. We should study well as students, work hard as adults, and aim for the highest. We should also do our best in everything we do no matter how easy or how hard it is. We should learn how to deal with problems in life so as to gain something from every mistake we do. We should not give up even for once in order to reach our goals in life.

British

As I hear the word British, royalty pops into my mind.When I hear it, I right away think of their monarch, their charming princes, and royal blood. Aside from these people, the British also have their prime minister, Tony Blair. I guess there's a lot to see when you visit their country, including the Birmingham Palace and that gigantic ferrriswheel where you get to see a huge part of the London. I think the British are also known for their unique accent, which I myself am interested in using someday. I just love hearing those hot British guys speak! I dream of going there some day because of the countless tourist spots their country has.

My Version of Light Is...

For me, when there is light, there is peace. I think light symbolizes peace and heaven. Just like those scenes in the movies. They give you the thought that in heaven, there is light. I guess when there is light, God is with you. I think of this that's why when there is light, I feel so relaxed and so light. I feel that all my burden just goes away. When there is light, I feel so comfortable. I feel that the Lord is near. All my fears go away and my mind is emptied from all troubles. Light is something everyone in this world needs. Without light, we may not be able to enjoy life. We may not be able to see the beautiful world around us. Light is the first thing God created in this world because he knows how important it is to us. Light is one of God's greatest gifts to us.

I am a Person of Darkness Because...

I am a person of darkness because I keep a lot of things to myself. I don't talk much, I don't express myself a lot. Most of the times, I don't show too much of my feelings towards other people. I am a person of darkness because in a way, I am too secretive. Sometimes, people even think of me as someone I'm not because I tend to be too quiet at times. They get to have wrong impressions about me because of what I do. They also think I'm mysterious or some sort of thing because of my quietness. I am also a person of darkness because there are times when I get too emotional over petty things. I guess this is just the way I am, you know. I'll have to accept it because this is how God wanted me to be.

What I Really Want to Say Is

What I really want to say is that I'm really tired of being so quiet and shy. I just feel like I want to throw it all away in the bin, but I think I can't help it. One thing is, I don't think I'm a great speaker and I'm not really good in keeping conversations going. I feel like everytime I talk, all the words seem to be gone. I don't know what's wrong with me. No matter how hard I try not to be shy anymore, I always fail. I know I won't get anything with being shy. "Being quiet gets you nothing": this is what I always say to myself. Even though I try so hard, the words just won't come out of my mouth. I really want to say that I want to change this pathetic attitude of mine. It's just not going to get me anywhere. What I really want to say is that: I hate myself, and I'm going to try doing something about it.

The Best Thing That Happened To Me This Summer

I totally love summer vacation. For me, it's really the best time of year. You see, whenever summer time comes, I feel so relaxed and I enjoy every day of it. I wish summer vacation never ends. This summer, I really had a lot of fun. I had fun just sleeping and eating. Well there are times when we would go out too. This summer, I spent a lot of time swimming and playing badminton, my favorite sports. Now, I just feel so sad that I can't spend most of my time doing those things anymore. School is back. So are the homeworks, projects, and, what I hate the most, the oppressing exams. It really sucks you know. Despite this, I'm still very happy because I got to enjoy the long break. I also won't forget the best thing that happened to me this summer: all day shopping. I love shopping! It's just the best thing one can do! Oh, I just love summer vacation!
